Organization Against Trafficking of Human

Working across the borders

“The human rights of individuals are exploited in the worst form of human trafficking. To combat trafficking and provide equal rights to the victims of trafficking are primary objectives of the international community.”

Trafficking in persons is a modern-day form of slavery, involving victims who are typically forced, defrauded or coerced into sexual or labor exploitation. It is among the fastest growing criminal activities, occurring both worldwide and in individual countries. People, mostly women and children, are trafficked across borders worldwide. People are snared into trafficking by various means. For example, physical force is used or false promises are made regarding a legitimate job or marriage in a foreign country to entrap victims into prostitution, pornography and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation or slavery-like labor conditions in factories and fields. Victims suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against self and family, passport theft, and physical restraint.

Countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are also source, transit and destination countries of trafficked persons. The governments of the 3 countries have been making significant efforts to combat trafficking though have failed to demonstrate increased central government law enforcement response to huge trafficking problem that prevails in these 3 countries and therefore have been placed on Tier two watch list. Several Non-Governmental Organizations working against trafficking have been established in order to discourage trafficking and provide support to the victims in public life. This project aims to improve the standard of living of the victims of trafficking and to create awareness on trafficking among the probable victims in order to reduce the ratio of trafficked person in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh

There are four main strategies for implementing this project: 1. Awareness campaign/advocacy and networking  2. Women and Child Trafficking Bureau  3.  Intervention 4.  Organizing a South Asia consultation

Goals: Making people conscious and aware of trafficking as an issue, bring government into dialogue and policy making, encouraging law enforcing agencies to take law pursuit against people who are involved in trafficking in order to eliminate this problem from our society.

Shaping the Future

"Working Together Towards A More Literate Community"

Statement of Need: Young Social Reformers Adult Literacy Program will provide free adult literacy services to the local community. Pakistan stands among countries where the literacy rate is quite low. More than half of the population of Pakistan is uneducated. Reading and writing is a must for every individual of the society. Therefore Young Social Reformers proudly takes the initiative of starting campaigns to promote literacy among the uneducated. Our main aim through this program is to enable people regardless of their age to read and write in order to develop a more literate nation.

The Adult Literacy Program aims to ensure that majority of the individuals are basically equipped with the knowledge of how to read and write in their native language Urdu and English as their second language. This will enable individuals to at least be able to read news papers and be able to help their children get quality education and be able to read to them.

Strategies:

  1. Identifying communities/motivating people
  2. Advocacy and networking
  3. Weekly Classes for a group of 20
  4. Workshops for a group of 25

Target Community: Adults or senior citizens who do not have the basic education and do not have command over reading and writing skills. With a will to acquire basic skills to read and write.

Plan of Implementation

Shaping the Future program of Young Social Reformers will focus on the following

·        Adult Learners: The literacy program can help Urdu speaking adults to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Adult learners will be matched with trained volunteer tutors for free one-to-one tutoring. Instruction will be based on the learner's needs and goals. Students and tutors will meet twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half each session. Students who wish to participate in this program can call the literacy office to make an appointment for an intake interview and a reading assessment. English as a second language will also be taught as basics to enable the student to read and write in English.

·        FAMILIES FOR LITERACY: Families for Literacy services will be available to adults who will be enrolled in the literacy program and who are having pre-school aged children. This exciting program is designed to break the illiteracy cycle by showing parents how to read to their children and introduce books into the home through the book give-away program. The program also offers parenting workshops, monthly story times and craft.

·        COMPUTER LITERACY One-on-one computer literacy instruction will be available to tutors and learners enrolled in the program. Lessons will include computer basics, word processing and surfing the Internet. Lessons will be an hour-long and a reservation will be required to participate in the program.

REQUIREMENTS

The program will require following from the communities.

·        VOLUNTEER TUTORS Volunteer tutors will work with adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills. Tutors work on a one-to-one basis with an adult learner, planning lessons around the goals of the student to integrate the learner's interests and needs. Hours are flexible and volunteer tutor meets twice a week with the student at the Class. Total volunteer time will be approximately 5 hours per week, including travel and preparation time. Interested volunteers will be required to complete a Tutor Training Workshop which will be offered on a bi-monthly basis. This fast-paced course will prepare a tutor to teach reading and writing skills to adult learners in our program using context-based, student-centered techniques. The Tutor Training explores techniques for word attack skills, vowels, and consonants that involve the students with the learning process. In addition, tutors will be expected to attend at least two in-service workshops or meeting per year.

WHAT OTHERS CAN DO TO HELP?

  • Volunteer their time as a tutor to teach someone to read and write.
  • Refer students, tutors and other volunteers to the literacy program.
  • Offer in-kind services such as printing, copying, supplying refreshments for meetings, or other services.
  • Contribute funds, materials, equipment or their time to fundraising efforts.

“Literacy arouses hopes, not only in society as a whole but also in the individual who is striving for fulfillment, happiness and personal benefit by learning how to read and write. Literacy... means far more than learning how to read and write... The aim is to transmit... knowledge and promote social participation.”
